Air Filters, Purifiers, and UV Systems: What Northshore Louisiana Homeowners Need to Know
October 28, 2026 · BCS Mechanical
When most people in Hammond or Covington think about indoor air quality, humidity is the first thing that comes to mind — and with good reason. But humidity is just one piece of the picture.
Allergens, airborne dust, pet dander, mold spores, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and bacteria all move through your home's air every day. Your HVAC system circulates that air continuously, which makes it both a potential source of contamination and the most powerful tool you have for improving what your family breathes.
What's Actually in Your Home's Air
Common indoor air pollutants in Louisiana homes include:
- Dust and dust mite allergens — especially prevalent in homes with carpet or older, leaky ductwork
- Pet dander — microscopic particles that stay airborne for hours
- Mold spores — Southeast Louisiana's heat and humidity create near-ideal mold conditions indoors and out
- Pollen — oak, pine, and ragweed pollen infiltrates every time a door opens, and the Northshore sees heavy pollen seasons
- VOCs — off-gassing from paints, cleaning products, furniture, and building materials
- Bacteria and viruses — circulated through the air handler and distributed through duct systems
Allergy symptoms that worsen indoors, persistent musty odors, and household members who consistently feel better when they travel are all signs worth paying attention to.
Air Filters: The Foundation
Your system's air filter is the first line of defense against airborne particles. Filter effectiveness is rated by MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) — the higher the number, the finer the particles it captures.
- MERV 1–4: Basic fiberglass filters. They protect the equipment from large debris but do very little for air quality.
- MERV 8–11: The practical sweet spot for most Northshore homes — effective against dust, pollen, mold spores, and pet dander without restricting airflow on typical residential systems.
- MERV 13+: High-efficiency filtration that can capture very fine particles. Effective, but not every system is designed to handle the added airflow resistance — confirm compatibility before upgrading.
Change your filter more often than the package suggests. Homes in Hammond, Mandeville, or Ponchatoula dealing with pets, nearby vegetation, or heavy construction in the area may need a filter swap every four to six weeks during peak seasons. A clogged filter degrades air quality and forces your system to work harder — it's an efficiency issue, not just a comfort one.
Whole-Home Purifiers and Media Filters
When a standard 1-inch filter isn't keeping up, whole-home systems offer a meaningful step up.
Media filters use thick, accordion-style filter material installed in the return-air duct. They deliver MERV 10–13 filtration across a much larger surface area than a standard filter, and typically need replacement only once or twice a year.
Electronic air cleaners apply an electrical charge to attract and trap fine particles before they recirculate. They're highly effective on very small particulates but require routine cleaning to hold their performance.
Whole-home air purifiers with activated carbon address VOCs and persistent odors in addition to particles — useful in homes where off-gassing from new flooring, chemical sensitivities, or cooking odors are ongoing concerns.
If you're unsure which option suits your home, an HVAC tech familiar with the Northshore's specific conditions — the humidity, pollen loads, and housing stock common to Tangipahoa and St. Tammany parishes — can look at your system and help you choose before you invest. BCS Mechanical serves homes across the region and can advise based on what your equipment can actually handle.
UV Germicidal Lights
Louisiana homes are especially prone to mold growth on the evaporator coil inside the air handler. When mold colonizes that coil, it pushes spores through every room every time the system runs — even if the rest of the house looks clean and well-maintained.
UV germicidal lights mounted inside the air handler interrupt that cycle. Positioned to shine directly on the coil, they use ultraviolet light to kill mold, bacteria, and some viruses before they reach your living spaces. For homeowners in Slidell, Denham Springs, or other communities with high ambient moisture who deal with recurring musty smells, this is one of the more practical IAQ upgrades available.
Ventilation in Tight Homes
Well-sealed homes — whether newer construction or older homes that have been weatherized — can trap stale air and VOCs inside. Energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) bring in fresh outdoor air while transferring heat and moisture from the outgoing stale air, so you're not wasting conditioning energy in the process. It's a more specialized upgrade, but worth discussing if your home feels stuffy even after filtration and humidity control are addressed.
Signs It's Time to Look Closer
- Allergy or asthma symptoms that improve when family members spend time away from home
- Dust accumulating on registers and surfaces shortly after cleaning
- Musty or chemical odors that don't clear up with ventilation
- Respiratory issues that cycle frequently through the household
These aren't always HVAC problems — but your system is always worth evaluating.
